Is this a good U. S. History LEQ. Here is the prompt: By comparison, the South never had a chance to win the Civil War over the North. Support, refute, or modify this statement. My LEQ: During the 1800s sectional tensions between the North and South in the U. S. grew more and more prominent as time went on. Tensions grew so much that their difference in beliefs began to become apparent in various elections, politics, and state governments. Because of the conflicts and tension between the North and South, violence ensued in 1861 after the election of Abraham Lincoln. The South seceded and declared war on the Union known as the American Civil War. I believe that the South never had a chance to win the Civil War over the North because of their severe lack of resources, finances, population, and a strong government.

The South never had a real chance of winning the American Civil War from the start because the North was already a more developed country with railroads and an already established economy. During the war, we can see the Confederacy’s inability to fund the war when they have no other option other than to print more money and eventually cause inflation. While the North simply financed the war with taxes and an already established economy. The North could have carried the war on for longer than the South with an established source of income and government. The North had significantly more resources than the South as the Union had numerous railroads and factories, unlike the Confederacy. Even if the South had a great number of resources, Scott developed the Anaconda Plan in 1861 which essentially isolated the South from a number of trading ports including the Mississippi River. As you can see in these examples the Confederacy just lacks the number of resources and money needed to defeat the North in the Civil War.

Two more reasons why the Confederacy never had a chance at winning the Civil War against the Union was their huge difference in population and unestablished government. The Union consisted of 20 states while the Confederacy only had 11 states total. This massive difference in population proved to be a huge disadvantage for the Confederacy during the war as the Union had a larger army than the Confederacy. The Union also had a strong unified government that had been successful for many years. Meanwhile, the Confederacy was just a collection of rebellious states held together by Jefferson Davis. This was bad for the Confederacy because they were fighting the Union while they were still somewhat under the Union government’s rule as seen when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1861 freeing all slaves in rebellious (confederate) states. As seen, all throughout the Civil War the South never had a chance to win the American Civil War.

The American Civil War in 1861 closely relates to the year 1835 when Texas declared Independence from Mexico because they didn’t agree with the laws set in place by Santa Anna, specifically his rules on slavery. Ironically, independent Texas went on to become one of the 11 states in the Confederacy during the Civil War.
