An ancient Greek philosopher (470-399 B. C.E.) who is consider the father of Western
philosophy. His views are known only through the writings of his pupil. Although he
wrote nothing, his method of question and answer is captured in the dialogues of his
student, Plato. He taught on epistemology (the nature of knowledge), ontology (the
nature of being), and ethics (moral values). He often questioned aristocrats and public
figures, eventually leading to his trial and imprisonment. He was given charges of impiety
and was condemned to death. He died in prison by drinking hemlock (poison).
