The governor serves a four-year term, and there is a two-term limit. The governor serves as the chief executive of the state. At each legislative session opening, the governor provides recommendations on how to keep a balanced budget for the state. The governor conducts the business of the state with regard to other states and the national government and commands the Oklahoma militia (which can be called upon to protect Oklahoma citizens) as Oklahoma’s commander-in-Chief. The governor also approves and signs bills into laws or vetoes them. Finally, the governor oversees Oklahoma’s criminals by either accepting or rejecting commutations, pardons, and paroles, and appoints officials to various positions throughout Oklahoma’s government.
