Why were some European political leaders, such as Kings and Dukes, attracted to Luther’s movement? How could supporting Luther benefit them?

The Protestant Reformation, led by the monk Martin Luther, was a movement that took place in Europe in the 16th century, whose objectives were religious and political.

Luther wrote a document of 95 tests that criticized the Catholic Church and the Pope, such as condemning usury, condemning clerical celibacy and condemning the sale of indulgences.

The movement was supported by European political leaders such as Kings and Dukes, as the Church had an important role in the spiritual and administrative domain of the kingdoms, which was a reason for dispute with the State.

Luther therefore enlisted the support of political leaders as a way of guaranteeing what he said was the "divine right of kings", the right to obtain ideological power and the collection of taxes that had previously belonged to the Church.

Because getting rid of one universal and powerful Christian Church increased their power and wealth. They wouldn't have the Church limiting their power anymore or have to pay taxes to it. Also as the Church was a big supporter of the king it would increase their power against the king.

So, it was all political...more power, more money, more independence from king or Church. The papacy...completely usurped every royal household snd parliament it could should they decide something for their country and subjects that went against its teachings.

 The church interfered in all aspects of nation states affairs,taxes,wedfings,religious …everything and they grew tired of its meddling and took to luthers ideas.

people could go to church and listen to the teachings, but it was absolutely forbidden to own and/or read the books of both the old and new testaments. it was also prohibited to translate the books (which where originally in biblical hebrew) to any other language.

this was done so the church could remain in control of what their teachings were and to enhance their importance and power, while also being able to judge people's actions through information that was unavailable for the general public.
