In a paragraph of no less than five sentences, explain how Edgar A. Guest’s poem “You” expresses the idea that our character is determined by our conscious choices. In your explanation, use at least two quotes from the poem.

Your character is determined or defined by your conscious choices, because in the poem it says "No one will force you to open your eyes;" No one will choose or speak for you, in life you need to speak for yourself, and make the decisions. If you don't some people out there will not consider you a person, for you need other people to make your decisions, and speak for you, cause you cannot do that on you own. It also says "Life is a game, but it's you who must say," life is a game, there will be the ups and downs, but it is you who must go threw life, being on your own, and being independent, and making your choices. If you don't, you'll never know what life was like, cause you tell people what you want to say, you tell people what you want to do, but, you don't do them. And lastly, it says "All these are questions which you must decide.  Yours the selection, whichever you do;" You are the King or Queen of yourself, you  make the decisions, you speak for yourself, for nobody can rule you, but you.2

since most of current immigration into the u.s., both legal and illegal, is coming from latin america. it would be very difficult to imagine or rationalize a country my fellow citizens are trying desperately to flee into, would pose a threat to my prosperity or freedom. since the u.s. has a long history of intervention, but no record of permanent occupation, i would not feel oppression is the main objective.  

the largest free trade nation, along with the largest gdp in the world wanting to expand it's economic policy on us, and including us, could only be positive. the u.s. government has no interest in, or way of simply forcing american culture on us. and has no track record of it. other nations that adopted american social culture, or "americanization" did so voluntarily, mainly through the choice of allowing american businesses and u.s. citizens to come into their nations, as free operatives.

the group i'm selecting: greeks.

a first group of greek immigrants came to the us in the 1850s. the second group came to america starting in the 1890s due to economic opportunities they didn't have back in their home caused by the hardships of ottoman rule. greek immigration was 90% male, many of them expected to work and return to greece after earning enough capital, but ultimately had to remain in the us after the greek genocide.
