During this time many Texans succumbed to illness brought on by poor weather, starvation, and diseases. The Texas settlers deserted their homes out of fear that Santa Anna’s army was approaching. The events that led to this massive movement of Texas settlers began with the loss at the Alamo and Goliad. The Texans feared Santa Anna after his ruthless attacks during these battles and saw that Sam Houston was retreating his army to the Colorado River. They interpreted Houston’s move as a sign that he was retreating and followed him thinking Texas would be taken back by Mexico.
