The extent to which the role of samurai changed from 1100 CE to 1850C. E was:

The samurai were an elite class in the Japanese society as they were considered to be warriors who lived by a certain code of conduct called bushido.

They were in charge of defending the land and fighting during war times, but when there were extended periods of peace, their usefulness became to decline.

First, they were delegated other tasks such as pottery and calligraphy, but as time went on, they were not needed anymore, because of urbanization and isolationism.

Explanation:

The role of samurai greatly changed from 1100 CE to 1850 CE. in the beginning,  samurai used by the kings for defending their territories against enemies but later the peaceful rule of two and half centuries of Tokugawa and his descendants decreases the necessity of samurai so they are decrease in number with the passage of time. The main reason of decrease in number of samurai  is urbanization and  end of isolationism.
