Colonist were heavily taxed, though not as bad as today, they had not the concent of the laws passed nor the ability to pass laws desperatly needed, therefore they wished to change the system whereby they would not be taxed without representatives which represented the people, pretty much like today

‘No Taxation without representation’ was a slogan which initiated from 1700s and summarized the grievances of American colonies. This issue also later on led to American Revolution. The core issue behind this was that many of the colonies thought that they were not able to have their say and were not able to represent themselves in the parliament. They thought that the British Government is imposing unnecessary and unwanted taxes on these colonies and they were not even having any say against those taxes. They raised this slogan of ‘No Taxation without representation’ because their demand was that they should have a representative who can put forward their viewpoints in front of the British government. During that time many laws such as Sugar Act and Stamp Act were imposed by British government but colonists protested against such acts stating them to be illegal. The Stamp Act that was imposed on American colonists to generate Taxes had nothing to do with postage instead it was imposed on the materials which were printed and used in colonies such as Magazines and Newspapers.
