How did the economies of the north and south differ

The South was a primarily agricultural economy with little manufacturing. Lucrative cash crops such as tobacco and cotton were big money in the South. The North, on the other hand, had a very manufacturing-intensive economy that relied on big factories and innovations. With a much bigger population, the North could supply enough workers to churn out all kinds of finished goods. Generally, the North's economy was more stable.
