Lesson Goals:

The Republicans wanted in the 1860 presidential platform that they wanted to stop Slavery's spread in the United States.

In 1860, a third party joined the race- the Constitutional Union Party.

• They felt the main parties were too focused on Slavery.

• They supported the Constitution and the Union.

John Bell became the party's 1860 nominee.

The 1860 presidential election had four major candidates.

• Abraham Lincoln, Republican

• Stephen Douglas, Democrat

• John Breckinridge, Southern Democrat

• John Bell, Constitutional Union Party.

Election Of 1860

Lincoln won the 1860 election by taking the majority of the electoral vote.

• He did not win 50% of the popular vote.

• He did not win a single Southern State.

Lincoln and Douglas were both trying to win the Northern vote.

Douglas and Breckinridge were both trying to win the Southern vote.

In December

1860, South Carolina called a state convention.

• On December 20, the convection voted 169-0 for secession.

• The convection also called for a confederacy of Southern states.

Other Southern states followed South Carolina.

• Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana voted for secession in January 1861.

• Texas voted for seceding in February 1861

Lincoln said, "The government cannot survive if citizens do not accept results of an election."

On February 4, 1861, delegates from several states met to form a new Confederate government.

• Jefferson Davis was named president of the Confederacy.

• The Confederacy declared itself independent of the United States.

• Was president of the Confederacy.

• Was inaugurated in February 1861.

• Wanted to avoid war.

• Believed the South had the right to leave the Union.

Lincoln wanted to make it clear that he did not accept secession.

In his address, David discussed how the confederacy would endure.

• Explained the reasons for secession.

• Described what form the new government would take.

• Expressed that war was not wanted, but the Confederacy would fight if necessary.

Lincoln and Davis had different opinions on Secession.

The Confederacy began to size federal property across the South.

Fort Sumter was important because it protected commercial areas of the Southern Coast.

In 1860, the fort was one of the few still under Union control.

Could the conflict at Fort Sumter be resolved peacefully?

Needed to supply Fort Sumter

• Soldiers might abandon the fort

• Resupplying risked armed conflict with the South

Rejected secession

• Lincoln did not want to appear to be giving in the Confederacy by not resupplying the fort.

Wanted to avoid war

• Lincoln still hoped to avoid war
