It was a huge talking point leading up to the Civil War, and during that the south and the north tried to gain the edge over the other. During this the Missouri Compromise was established preventing any slave states being established in the North. In summary, these were the two most important things:

1. Slavery was a touchy subject in both the South and North, the South being Pro-Slavery and the North being Anti-Slavery (for the most part)

2. Both the North and the South tried to get states on their sides, with many states like Texas being established and becoming a slave state.
