Why did Jefferson say this? The Declaration of Independence wasn't just written for King George III & the British Parliament's benefit. Jefferson writes that a "decent respect to the opinions of mankind" requires the colonists to explain their reasons for separation. Why do you think Jefferson wanted the world at large to understand America's plight for independence?
