The settlements had their own elected officials and governed themselves for the most part. The two most common jobs in mission settlements were farming and ranching. People also were merchants, fisherman, tailors and so on. All the jobs necessary to make the settlement function were done. For fun the settlers held horse races and other sporting events. They also conducted dances and different activities for recreation. Life was challenging in the settlements but there was always room for fun.
