The border conflict over the region of Alsace and Lorraine began the rivalry between France and Germany.

The Balkan region saw the rise of nationalism as the Ottoman Empire started to lose its power. The Balkan issue became one of the causes for the First World War as the European powers - Russia, Germany, Britain, and Austria, wanted to control the area.
