Who lived immediately to the north of greece, and how did the greeks view them

The Macedonians lived immediately to the north of Greece. The Greeks, especially Athenians, viewed them as "backwards," less civilized than the high culture of Athenian society.

As the Macedonian kingdom became more powerful under Philip of Macedon (father of Alexander the Great), the Athenian statesman Demosthenes even went as far as to slander the Macedonians as "barbarians."

It should be remembered, however, that one of the greatest philosophers of Athens originally hailed from Macedon. Aristotle was born in Stagira, in Macedon. He came to Athens as a young man to study at Plato's Academy. Later in life, he returned again to Macedonia and became tutor to Alexander the Great.

Macedonians lives north of Greece. The relationship with macedonia were troubled to say the least. The two population had different histories, different backgrounds, and so often they were fighting. Probably before Alexander the Great Greek people thought also that Macedonian were less than them, almost inferior, as they tend to place themselves at the highest form of civilization the world had ever seen.
