It's likely that people were concerned about how many people died during the construction of the canal. However, US citizens might have felt proud that the completed canal claimed significantly fewer lives than the failed French attempt. The French might have been sad and angry that their own attempt at the canal was more deadly and embarrassed that they weren't able to finish the project
