Beliefs of Confucianism included:

complete loyalty to rulers including emperors and local rulers obedience to one's father such that any disobedience would be a dishonor upon the child reverence for old people chastity for women as they had to stay pure till marriage and avoid adultery by all means

As it was a patriarchal set of beliefs, men did not need to practice chastity and so were sometimes seen engaging in extra-marital affairs.
