In the colonial period, slaves were “needed” because there were Not enough people to work. Slaves were most commonly used by rich businesses and rich plantation owners. 80- 90 percent of Americans did not own slaves. Many poor white southerners got in trouble for trading and socializing with slaves. Many northern newspapers made lots of money advertising slaves for sell to the South. Many northerners made money kidnapping free blacks in the North and selling them in the South. American would not be as rich as it is today without slavery. Some people believe African Americans should be compensated for their ancestors’s labor during the war of American Slavery. Others argue it would bankrupt America. Still others argue that since so few white Americans owned slaves, there should not be a “reparation tax.” Life of the Northern Slaves:
•Slavery was big in the north from 1690 to 1820. •Northern slaves were often taught to read.
•Northern slave owners were not as afraid of slave uprising as southern slave owners.
•Few if any slaves in the north worked in the field. they worked in offices, factories, on the docks, and others.
•Slaves in the north worked in the a variety of tasks.
•Slaves in the north often worked side by side with their owner or least saw them once a day.

Life of Southern Slaves:
•Slavery in the south was big from around 1620 to 1864. •In the South it was illegal to teach a slave how to read.
•In the South slave owners were terrified of a slave revolt.
•Southern slaves worked either in the field or in the main house most worked in the field.
•Southern slaves almost never met their owner.
•Southern slaves were controlled by overseers.
