the late 19th century, many American Midwestern farmers felt their interests were being neglected at the expense of Eastern industry. They were disillusioned with the government and basically felt they had no voice. To exert their influence and promote their interest, they banded together and organized what has become known as the Grange, or more officially, the National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry. This fraternal organization lobbied the government on behalf of agriculture. The Grange Movement spun off numerous political groups, including the Farmer's Alliance and others.
