In the legend, after accepting mortality, Ta-ren-ya-wa-gon became a man and took the name Hiawatha. When the five tribes namely, Mowhawk, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayugaa, and Seneca were troubled by other tribes they called on to Hiawatha for help.

Hiawatha, in return, asked them to wait for his arrival, so the five tribes came together at the Great Council Fire to await his coming.
