Maya, Olmecs, and Zapotec were some of the civilizations that arose during this period. The Classic period saw the emergence of independent city-states throughout the Maya region. The Teotihuacan controlled the Valley of Mexico. During the Post-classic, many of the city-states were indulge in warfare, and there was progress in weapons and population growth. The Aztec empire emerged as a power over the Valley of Mexico region after the Teotihuacan.
