How did population distribution change as a result of the Industrial Revolution? Cities grew rapidly as people moved from rural areas to work in industry. Cities near ports became less populated after sailing ships were replaced with steam-engine ships. The increase in the agricultural surplus caused people to move to the country. People moved to small towns because they could visit the city by train.
