separation of powers is when there is several branches of a government for example the us government has three branches the executive,judicial,legislative. Checks and balances is similar because their is a cycle so that each branch can check behind each other. It also helps to make sure no branch has too much power.

On the other hand, check and balances is a system that helps regulate powers when one branch may become too powerful.
