The Greek Gods performed another important function for the people of Greece. They provided
meaning. When it thundered and rained, it meant the gods were angry. When the ocean shuddered and
swallowed ships, they feared they had offended Poseidon, God of the Sea. When the sun rose and fell,
they saw Helios in his chariot streaking across the sky. Their mere existence on Mount Olympus gave
comfort to the fearful human mind that the world made sense and was ruled by bodies of grace and
beauty.
