In 1942, president Roosevelt gave the military the authority to take Japanese people into their custody. The Japanese people were forcefully moved from their homes to internment camps in Manzanar, at first. Between 1942 and 1945, a total of ten camps including camps Harmony and Minidoka, were opened.

Conditions in the camps were less comfortable. Residents used common laundry and bathrooms. The camps were fenced round and guarded by heavily armed security men.
