Just before the bell, Jeff stumbled into math class. Maya watched with
concern as he plopped into his seat and wearily rubbed his face. Throughout
the class, Jeff kept pinching himself to stay awake. Afterward, Maya
confronted him, wanting to know what was wrong. Jeff sighed. "I wouldn't
admit this to just anyone, Maya, but since you're my best friendIt's this
science project. My partner isn't doing his share of the work, and I can't let his
laziness hurt my grade. To make things worse, the topic we picked is a lot
harder than we'd planned. I've had only three hours of sleep each night this
week, and I'm feeling pretty sick.
