The Soviet Union left the Allied Control Council in March 1948, which ruled Germany occupied over this issue.   The Soviets denounced this move as an assault on the East German currency, and a blockade of all Berlin-West rail, road and water communications began on 24 June.

Why did Truman begin an airlift?

In reaction to the Soviet land route blockade into West Berlin, the U.S. is launching a major airlift of food, water, and medicine for the people of the besieged city. The Soviet action was in reaction to American and British officials refusing to allow Russia to have more say in Germany's economic future.

The Berlin Blockade was created by the Soviet Union to try and block off Western Allies from their portion of Germany. The USSR wanted to spread communism throughout Europe after WWII, and attempted to do so in East Berlin by providing Soviet supplies instead of American or British. The airlift that Truman began was to provide aid to the people living in East Berlin who were under oppression from Soviet rule. The airlift was also a show of the prosperity the Western Allies had and were willing to share under democracy.
