Marx states that "The History of ALL [emphasis mine] hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles" (4). Here and in various other places in the Manifesto, Marx makes statements of universal truth. Why? Are these claims true, false or made for rhetorical purposes? Are these universal claims necessary for the sake of his argument?
