1. "Cotton is king" is interpreted into that cotton was king over trade. It brought in tons of money and was the #1 export of the U.S. not only did it bring money to the south, but it payed Northern shippers.

2. The south was run by the elite wealthy planters rather than the people. So before the civil war the South some respect not so much a democracy as an oligarchy-or government bt the few-heavily influenced by a planter aristocracy.
