the main reason why the church was so powerful is that the king suported them with finances and protection from other other peoples seeking to destroy the church. the main world religeon in the Middle ages was chritiantiy so the kings would seek to find a church of there own. another reason that the church was so powerful was that they would enforce the laws they make on taxes by taking peoples money and killing them or there families if the taxes werent payed. this was something that was funded and backed by the kings.
