Federalism is a concept that admits the primacy of the power of central government over the power of the states. In order to form a working union and a functional nationwide government, the states had to relinquish large swaths of its sovereignty. In this way the US could be viable as a country. Large state powers were a product of historical circumstances in the 1770s and 1780s, of the experience of the First and Second Continental Congress.

But in order to establish a estable union, this compromise had to be adopted. But at the same, states retained many powers, but they can´t be more powerful that the federal authorities.
