The National Organization for Women (NOW) was created in 1966 to improve social conditions for women Demanded better educational opportunities, aided women in the workplace, and publicly denounced job discrimination Betty Friedman’s “The Feminine Mystique” was a radical book stating that female happiness was not built in the home. By 1968 Women were ready to act, Women's Liberation groups, joined by members of New York NOW, targeted the Miss America Beauty Contest in Atlantic City. This was the event from which the myth of "bra-burning" feminists was created by the press, distorting the early image of the movement.
