They did not pick a side in the war at first because they saw it as a European affair and they wanted to trade with both the Allied and Central Powers. It was only until the sinking of the Lusitania ship by German U-boats that had over 100 Americans on it and the Zimmerman Telegram in 1917 that the USA decided to join the war on the Allied side.
