These ideas stimulated social and economic reform, free trade, in Latin America.  

In 1808, Spain was invaded by the forces of the First French Empire, and the Spanish War of Independence began as part of the Napoleonic Wars. Spain was isolated from its empire and was even without control. It was almost a year before the Spaniards set up a provisional government, and many Americans thought it was time for them to rule over themselves.
