Originally called the Appalachian Scenic Highway, work on this North Carolina road began in 1935. In an effort to provide jobs to unemployed in the state, Congress funded workers from the Works Progress Administration, the Emergency Relief Administration, and Civilian Conservation Corps to help with construction. At 469 miles long, the road stretches from the Shenandoah National Park and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
