Pogroms were the violent riots aimed at persecuting or massacring a religious or ethnic group.

Anti Jewish pogroms in Russia began in 19th century. Although there were few Jews in Russia but the number of Jews increased when Ottoman Empire and Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth were annexed to Russian empire, these territories had large Jewish populations. The pogroms also took place in these territories.

They were forbidden to move to other parts of Russia unless they obtained a status of first guild merchant or university diploma or converted from Judaism.

The first pogrom in Russia took place in 1821 in Odessa, it was called Odessa pogroms and 14 Jews were killed in it. Execution of Gregory fifth in Constantinople was the cause of these pogroms.  The second pogroms started in 1881 and lasted till 1884, more than 200 anti Jewish events took place in Russian empire. It was triggered by the  assassination of Tsar Alexander Second.

The last time pogroms broke out  in 1903 and lasted till 1906, it left more than 2000 Jews dead. It was the most bloodiest of all the pogroms.
