It is the type of war where the two enemy armies occupy positions dug in the soil facing each other. This is the type of warfare typical of the First World War in 1914-1918 in the Western Front. Life was very hard for soldiers from both sides. Germans, French and British alike spent many months in one trench getting out of it from time to time for attacks on the enemy trenches, offensives that were often repealed by heavy gun machine and artillery fire, causing terrible carnage and on many ocassion, scarce gains of territory. Soldiers there were hiding, they had to endure rain, cold weather, scorching sun and mud in fall. They ate food rations and were exposed to illnesses such as dysentery, typhus and others.
