What role did geography play in how the Greeks obtained food? Everyone lived within 40 miles of the sea, so trade was necessary because fresh water was unavailable. Greece was surrounded by the ocean, so the people would rather fish than trade. The Pindus Mountains could not support crops because of their close proximity to the ocean. Greece was very rocky and supported the growth of only a few crops, so the people relied on trade for food.
