By the time of British rule of the caste system has already extended to some 3000 different castes. British legislatures didn't agree that members of lower caste should receive greater punishment than the upper caste. Under their rules, the untouchables and low caste Indians enjoyed the same privileges given to that of upper-caste Indians.

More people became useful to our country making it more economical and industrialized. And this helped to begin a sense of unitedness. Modernization of the caste system was largely due to to the father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi. More people started to become educated and started to come out of their shell. Any person can't be said inferior but the circumstances make them if provided better then they could be diamond in rough.

According to which the Indians were promoted to higher official ranks. Indians were sent to study in  Great Britain at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. And they were also given full Commission as King's commissioned Indian officers. The KCIOs were equivalent to British commissioned officer and have full authorities over British Troops.

Even the replacement of British officers was done by the Indians in the army and other areas as well. Like in Indian police the rank of Deputy Superintendent was introduced for the promotion to higher ranks. However, this equal footing was not liked by the Britishers so this scheme was suspended at the outbreak of the Second World War.
