Pietism evolved within Lutheranism in Germany and then was spread to other German speaking countries (Switzerland), Scandinavia and Baltic countries or even America. It coexisted with Enlightenment but we have to bear in mind that it was a German Enlightenment (Kant, Hamann, Herder and others)

Explanation: Pierism was a religious movement whose forerunner was for example Jakob Boehme (Christian mystic) whereas Enlightenment was introducing deism and with it (slowly and especially in France) rationalistic and mechanistic understanding of the world. German Enlightenment was different, it was not so radical in condemning Christian outlook.
