It is not known if it was a Chinese or Indian discovery but it was not popularized before the use in 1796. In 1796 Edward Jenner inoculated a boy in England and that prevented him from getting smallpox. This was later used as the groundwork for developing vaccines and today's vaccine culture and mass immunization would not be possible without Jenner and his experiments.
