At the same time, US President John Adams advocates strengthening the Navy and diplomatic settlement of the dispute with France. The end of the war and the reconciliation with Napoleon in 1800 did not hold Adams, the second US president in power, and in 1801 he lost the election to Thomas Jefferson.
