They will buy certain gifts for what they need.  I'm half Chinese and a common gift to be bought to celebrate the new year is a red wooden carved sculpture of whatever year it is.  If it is year of the pig as it was last year, then people will buy red pigs.  Also live red envelopes but that's not the point.
