the declaration of independence does not accurately address the issues of colonial america because the declaration only addressed the issues white americans were facing. abigail adams, the chickasaws and the new york times writer nikole hannah-jones all represent the different inequalities each unrepresented group of americans faced. in the document “abigail adams to john adams”, abigail adams reminds john adams to not forget the representation of women’s rights because there was no equal representation between women and men. the second document “the chickasaws send a message to congress”, the american colonists were taking away land from the chickasaws because the american colonists because didn’t respect the native americans and their wishes to keep their land. in the third document, “the idea of america” , it describes that for years african americans didn’t have rights and had to fight to gain equal rights.
in “abigail adams to john adams”, the issue not addressed is women’s lack of rights because the declaration only addressed men’s rights and not both genders. in the document, it explains abigail adams request for her husband that in the event women don’t have equal rights to men, that men themselves would abuse their standing in a marriage. she also hinted at a possible rebellion if women's rights weren’t included. abigail adams purpose in writing this is to tell her husband to give women equal rights. from the declaration of independence, it states that everyone has equal rights. however, abigail adams’ letter contradicts that through the inequality between men and women. thus showing that the declaration didn’t accurety address the issues of the 13 colonies.
in “the chickasaws send a message to congress” , the issue not addressed is the white american colonists taking land from the chickasaws. in the document, the chickasaws send a message to congress detailing that their land is being trespassed on without consideration for the tribe. to add on, the chickasaws are getting their vast amount of land sold to the colonists for cheap prices. this displays the colonists are taking advantage of the chickasaws by cheating them out of their land’s full worth with a lower price. this resulted in the tribe to be condensed onto a small plot of land. the chickasaws purpose in writing this document was to see if congress can address the problem by invoking laws that protect native american land.
in "the idea of america”, the issue not addressed for a long term was the inequality between blacks and whites. in the document, nikole hannah-jones says the declaration was made only in mind to give whites rights and not african americans. even though the declaration declared all men have equal and inalienable rights. however, said rights wouldn’t be granted to afrcian americans years later through years of resisting and protesting racial inequality. the purpose for this being written was to address the lengths and means the afrian american went for equal rights between races.
