The siege began on April 19, 1775, after the Battle of Lexington and Concord, when militia from the Massachusetts community blocked ground access to Boston.

The Continental Congress formed the Continental Army with George Washington as Supreme Commander. General Washington positioned his largest contingent of troops, numbering 4,000 and led by Nathanael Greene, on the Brooklyn Plateau on Long Island, facing Brooklyn and New York City.

He considers these soldiers as his best unit. On paper, Washington may have around 20,000 troops in its army.  

Yet, half of them are from various state militias, are poorly trained, not well equipped, and lack discipline. Many regular soldiers suffer from camp disease and are too ill to fight. March 17, 1776, the war ended and won by the Americans.
