Glorious Revolution, overthrew the Catholic King James II, which then was substituted by his daughter, Mary, and her husband, William of Orange. Not only did it change how England was governed, but it also impacted American colonists. Several of the rights in the American Bill of Rights are almost direct lifts from the English Bill.

Also known as The Bloodless Revolution and The Revolution of 1688, the Glorious Revolution happened in 1688-1689. Motives for the revolution were quite complex, which included both religious and political concerns. In the Glorious Revolution, King James II was overthrown. He was replaced by his daughter, Mary, and her husband, William of Orange.

Bill of Rights

The Glorious Revolution changed how England was governed. The England parliament had more power over the monarchy. It became the beginning of political democracy. Mary and William received more restrictions from Parliament, which caused a shift in the distribution of power. The new king and queen finally signed the Declaration of Rights. This was also known as the Bill of Rights, which managed to limit and define the regent’s power for the first time.

Impacts on the American colonist

When the news of the Glorious Revolution reached America, there were uprisings happened. Some of them include Leisler’s Rebellion, Boston Revolt, and the Protestant Revolution in Maryland. So, it is not exaggerating to say that the Glorious Revolution became the pretext of the American Revolution. Meanwhile, the English Bill of Rights became a heavy influence on the American Constitution and Bill of Rights.
