After World War II, two big blocks appeared in the world. The eastern block, communist, represented by URSS and its allies, and the western block, represented by the United States and its capitalist partners. We call the opposition between those two blocks and its various consequences, the cold war. The military conflict in Korea was the first major crisis where the USA and URSS face each other directly. The vision of the Americans in this period was simple and summarized by one word, the containment. Afraid that the URSS will take control of more countries in the world, they followed this containment politic, which means avoid each progression of communism ideology, each time that it was happening somewhere. It would have been very dangerous to let Korea fall in the eastern block because of China already led by communists.
