1890-1920's

Booker T.

(1881) Washington who rose out of slavery supported the strategy of gradualism which thus gained him a lot of support from the white peoples.

W.E.B Du Bois

(1910) Only African American of the five activists who formed the NAACP in 1910; NAACP officer and  editor of The Crisis (NAACP journal).

Ida B. Wells-Barnett

(1889) Fought for rights through journalism. Activism triggered by personal experience with the segregated Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in  1884 and the lawsuit she brought against the railroad in her hometown of Memphis, TN.  In 1889 became co-owner and operator of the newspaper Free Speech and Headlight.

1950-1960's

Civil rights movement was a struggle for social justice that took place mainly during the 1950s and 1960s. Civil Rights Act was passed in 1957

Jim Crow Laws were granted  in the 14 Amendment (1868) during Reconstruction which equal protection under the law. Following this was the 15 Amendment (1870) gave black's the right to vote.
