The British forces disembarked the first week of September 1777. On September 11 the Continental Army tried to block its advance near the Brandywine River, near today's town of Chadds Ford. The English attack was carried on two columns commanded by the generals Von Knyphausen and Cornwallis. Washington and General Greene managed to break the encirclement while a small rearguard commanded by La Fayette was responsible for covering the retreat.
