As president, george washington was head of the executive branch of our three-part government. washington knew he couldn't possibly make all the hundreds of decisions by himself, so he appointed advisers. washington appointed his advisers carefully and made sure they answered only to the president. most of those were called secretaries: secretary of the treasury, secretary of war, secretary of state. his advisers also included an attorney general.
